Flip Your Know-it-All

You Don't Know What You Don't Know, Ya Know?

When you think you KNOW, then you have just made your world smaller

Some of the least-wise folks I know are the most knowledgeable. When you and I have knowledge, we can fall into the trap of “know it all.” And in that state of mind it’s easy to alienate yourself to further understanding.

The brainiac of our time, Albert Einstein, said, “I believe in intuition and inspiration. Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world…”

We know so much, and yet we know so little. Science is able to put a man on the moon and manipulate DNA, but no one can figure out why deer always face north and south while grazing, or how it’s possible for a field ant to carry five thousand times its own body weight. And can you believe that mighty oak came from a tiny seed? Holy cow!

I figure, my pea-brain can comprehend only so much. This world, and its natural order, is precise and downright ingenious! And so, I marvel.

Here’s what I’m saying. There comes a time when it serves you to stop trying to figure out how the darn airplane can stay up in the air. Just accept that it does, otherwise, you’ll miss the ride.

What you and I don’t know about life is SO much more than what we do know. So keep stoking that special gift God gave you; Curiosity. It’s a factory-installed feature that will take you to magical places if you let it.

Clinch your fist for a second. Now, try and receive a gift. You can’t! Your fist is clinched!

The same holds true when you’ve convinced yourself that you know it all. Don’t miss the gifts God is trying to put into your hands! Stay inquisitive, marveled, and fascinated.

The know-it-all mindset is born of the ego and is rooted in our need to feel in control. Oh, we love to feel in control, don’t we? And we’re always being reminded of just how not in control we are.

At times, I wrestle with why things happen and why other things don’t happen. Why was that mishap brought into my life? Why was he born like that? Why didn’t I get that raise? Why do bad things happen? Why death? Why diseases? Why me?

The problem starts when you and I insist on having an answers (so we can feel less in the dark and more in control). That’s when we hedge on the side of making up answers, which in turn installs a big fat lid on our curiosity and further discoveries.

So let go of that insistence to know. Put down the gavel and stop requiring answers. As much as you and I love knowledge,  know that sometimes it’s OK not to know. Relax! Marvel! Appreciate the vast unknown and rare back your head and go “WOW!”
